Aldworth Mbalati DNG Energy to begin LNG bunkering operations at Coega

Delta Natural Gas (DNG) Energy has received final authorization from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to launch liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations at the Port of Coega in the Eastern Cape.

DNG Energy’s group CEO, Aldworth Mbalati, views this development as a significant win for both the company and South Africa, positioning the nation as a premium LNG bunkering hub in the Southern Hemisphere.

The license enables DNG Energy to address environmental, legislative, and business requirements in the South African and international LNG fuel markets. It grants the company rights to operate a terminal, including a floating storage unit (FSU) in Algoa Bay—the first of its kind in Africa. This facility will facilitate both offshore and onshore logistics, including ship-to-ship transfers for international vessels and LNG “milk runs” across the country.

The project’s impact extends beyond energy security for various industries and households; it also aims to create jobs and enhance skills development in South Africa.

“We are optimistic about South Africa’s future. Our goal is to supply the most affordable gas possible to drive the economy while responsibly contributing to the country’s socioeconomic aspirations,” Mbalati stated.

With this license, DNG Energy anticipates starting LNG deliveries in South Africa soon. The next steps involve completing the terminal infrastructure at Algoa Bay and finalizing the delivery of storage and bunkering equipment.
